Some estimate that over 90% of the population suffers from pimples or acne at various times throughout life. While acne is most often associated with the bodily changes that accompany puberty and adolescence, it is not uncommon for this disfiguring disease to continue into the twenties or thirties. The human skin tissue contains follicles, in which a shaft of hair protrudes through an opening, or pore, in the outer layers of skin. These pores also serve as a conduit for the release of various body oils and sweat. Unfortunately, because they are exposed to dead skin, dirt, etc., pores can become clogged and often fill up with sebaceous material. When bacteria are present, their secretion of lipases (enzymes) can break down the oily sebaceous materials, causing the release of free fatty acids. This results in an inflammatory response, usually seen as the redness and swelling, characteristic of acne. The anaerobic bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes (P acnes), is the primary microbial cause of acne. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that a powerful antibacterial agent, like tea tree oil, may have significant value in the prevention or treatment of acne. Recent clinical studies by Carson & Riley have confirmed that tea tree oil can kill or inhibit the growth of P acnes (Carson CF, Riley TV, Susceptibility of Propionibacterium acnes to the essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia, Letters in Applied Microbiology, 19:24-25 (1994)). Another study by Ingrid B. Bassett showed that 5% tea tree oil was comparable in its effects to 5% benzoylperoxide. The authors state, “The results of this study showed that both 5% tea tree oil and 5% benzoylperoxide had a significant effect in ameliorating the patients’ non-inflamed lesions ...” While the tea tree oil worked slower than the benzoylperoxide, the authors point out that there were significantly fewer side effects associated with the use of tea tree oil, “... the lack of obvious side effects may alone make it a feasible alternative.” (Bassett IF, et. al., A contemporary study of tea-tree oil versus benzoylperoxide in the treatment of acne. Medical Journal of Australia, 153:455-458 (1990))
